Naming

The name tourmaline comes from the ancient Sinhalese word turmali, meaning "mixed-color gems", or turamali, meaning "little things from Earth". Black tourmaline is named for its black color. Black tourmaline is also known as schorl. The term "Schorl" was used before the 14th century and is named after a small town in the German state of Saxony, where black tourmaline was found in a nearby tin mine.
