Naming and History
Black veins rhodonite is also called rose pyroxene. Named for its color. Its name comes from Greek and means "rose". In 1819, German naturalists used the Greek word rhodon, meaning "rose-colored," to refer to the stone's signature pink color.
Technically, the history of Rhodonite begins in Russia. Before 1819, rose pyroxene was known only in Russia. Locals call it Orletz, which means "eagle stone" in Russian. Legend said that the inhabitants found small pieces of Rhodonite in the eagle's nest, hence the nickname. It has also contributed to a local tradition of putting Rhodonite in a crib or gifting it to new parents as a soothing protective stone.
